In Search of America~~~with
Peter Jennings, who is a Canadian, but a really cute Canadian. I used
to have the hots for him, always watched ABC news. That wore off fairly
quickly since it was finally obvious even to me that my passion was not
going to be reciprocated. Anyway!! Last night was the third in the
series, which, BTW, is really quite mesmerizing.
First show had
to do with cattle/sheep ranchers in Utah who are totally pissed that
the feds introduced the grey wolf back into the area and, bless their
fuzzy little hearts, have grown fat, sassy and prolific. And with a
taste for steak and mutton. These ranchers lease their land (our
national park) from the federal government and are making their living
compliments of the American taxpayer. This is, by the way, a
never-ending fight between the ranchers and I guess you could say,
people like me who think the wolf has every right to live in and around
our precious national recreational parks. Go lovely grey
wolf........you are magnificent.
Second show portrayed a
group of high school students who, by virtue of their school play
"Hair", grasped some of the meaning behind their parents' involvement
in the social changes of the '60's. They apparently didn't "get it"
when they first started rehearsing the play but by the end, they
apparently felt really good about everything. Not too difficult for a
group of mostly privileged, white, middle/upper class kids. Give this
episode ** stars.
Ah, but last night's episode, a real
blood-boiler. Illegal immigrants from Mexico. Breaking federal laws by
entering this country illegally, using a phony social security card to
obtain jobs, etc etc. This is probably one of the most controversial
arguments we American citizens can engage in. Heard from both sides of the situation in the show last night.
At
the end I was not convinced that these people, no matter how nice they
are (the ones who were interviewed/involved in show), no matter how
hard they work, blah, blah, I'm afraid I am one of those nasty people
who believe they should not have the same benefits American citizens enjoy. I resent it and if that offends anyone, so be it. BTW, I am also extremely upset at the concessions made in America to accommodate the Hispanic population by putting everything in English AND Spanish. I'm a real shithead, eh???
